Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
Physicians continuously need to maintain and further develop their knowledge and skills in their expert field and in medicine as a whole. Maintaining good medical care and developing activity and skills through a systematic Continuing Professional Development (CPD) plan is therefore of utmost importance.
I am registered to the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programme at the Royal College of Physicians of London and keep my CPD diary schedule updated on a monthly base. During the last CPD activity period from April 2014 to March 2015, the sum of my external and internal credits appeared as 204, more than four times exceeding the annual minimum of 50 credits required.
Postgraduate education in the United Kingdom
From April 2005 onwards I have regularly taken part in the weekly clinical Postgraduate Meetings and Journal Club meetings of my relevant clinical placements and visit national and international conferences and workshops.
Since my permanent appointment in 2007, I attend the weekly postgraduate Grand Round medical meetings at the Diana Princess of Wales Hospital and take part at the weekly Journal Club discussions, multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings as well as monthly Audit and Quality and Safety meetings in the Hospital. I regularly attend the postgraduate research meetings at the Musculoskeletal Unit at the University of Leeds and the bi-monthly Regional Meetings in the Yorkshire area and also take part at national and international conferences both in rheumatology and in general (internal) medicine.
Postgraduate education in Hungary
As part of my training in general medicine (equivalent with MRCP in the UK) and in rheumatology (equivalent with CCST in the UK), my postgraduate education was carried out at the Semmelweis University in Budapest, Hungary. These training periods (four years for rheumatology and five years for internal medicine) are now fully accepted by the European Community standards (Annex-C of Directive 93-16 EC). I regularly attended the weekly postgraduate meetings at our University Hospital and the daily case discussions at my relevant ward placements in our Institute. Within the period of 2000-2005, I was granted 796 CME credit points by the Semmelweis University (minimum requirement 250 CME credits).

Teaching
Teaching is an integral part of all rheumatologists’ activity.
Teaching activity at the Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust
Presently I teach trainee doctors and GP colleagues for rheumatology on a daily base. This activity is conducted through clinics, ward rounds, MDT meetings as well as regular lectures for GPs on actual problems in rheumatology, such as DMARDs and biologicals, local injection therapy, etc. I also teach medical students from Sheffield and Hull & York Universities during clinical sessions in Scunthorpe General Hospital. I regularly conduct postgraduate lectures in our Diana Princess of Wales Hospital in Grimsby. My recent annual Grand Round lecture topic in October 2015 was gender differences in rheumatology, presenting and discussing patients with male lupus, female gout and female ankylosing spondylitis.
Another educational activity is conducted at the bi-monthly Audit meetings in the form of ‘Consultant Update’-type lectures. The last such presentation was held in January 2015 on Scleroderma and related Overlap Syndromes. I regularly take part at the Quality and Safety Meetings. In October 2014 I presented a case of failed diagnosis of lung cancer, causing back pain due to metastatic bone disease.
Teaching activity at locum NHS positions
In my past locum consultant rheumatologist positions I took part in teaching year-3 medical students on general musculoskeletal examinations, such as weekly sessions in Weston General Hospital and in Trym Ward, Southmead Hospital. I also worked teaching junior staff (SHOs and specialist registrar doctors) and lecturing for local GP colleagues in my actual placements throughout the area, such as in Southmead Hospital in Bristol, the Weston General Hospital in Weston-super-Mare and the Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases in Bath.
Teaching activity at the University of Bristol
From the beginning of my stay in Bristol and over the years I have been involved in teaching activities for medical student and trainee doctors. I performed several lectures for medical students, such as about the periarthritis of the shoulder, while working with Professor Dieppe, about chloroquin-induced myopathies, nail-patella syndrome and hypophosphatemic osteomalacia while working with Professor Kirwan. In 2001, I took part in a multidisciplinary education panel for medical students. At the postgraduate level, I have lectured about the pathology of knee pain, osteoarthritis and autologous chondrocyte implantation.
Teaching activity at the Semmelweis University in Budapest, Hungary
The National Institute of Rheumatology and Physiotherapy is a teaching hospital in rheumatology, attached to the Semmelweis University. From the very beginning of my professional life as a rheumatologist, I regularly took part in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. In between 1980-2005 I conducted more than two hundred teaching lectures for medical students, physiotherapists and rheumatology trainee doctors. I also took part in the examination process of medical students and rheumatology specialist registrars. I wrote and directed a 90-minute educational video (now on DVD) about the diagnostics of rheumatic diseases.

Research
General overview
I conduct medical research since my student years. The initial part was performed at the Semmelweis University in Budapest. Since 1991 I was invited to work with colleagues at the University of Bristol. In my present NHS position, my research activity is conducted through our local Research and Development Unit.
Recent research
Since my appointment for a permanent NHS consultant post in rheumatology in 2007, I continued my previous activity as a principal investigator for phase 2 and 3 randomised controlled trials and observational surveys under the umbrella of the musculoskeletal specialty group of the North and East Yorkshire and Northern Lincolnshire Comprehensive Local Research Network (NEYNL-CLRN). Our local research Team consists of Debrah Bates, leader of the Resarch and Development Department as well as research nurses Carol Gray and Julie Browning. In recent years we have completed three industrial and one portfolio trial, conduct four ongoing studies and prepare three new investigations. The four completed trials include the CAPRA-2 trial on modified-release Prednisone, a genetic biomarker study, a portfolio study on hand function in rheumatoid arthritis and an industrial trial comparing aTNF treatment and IL-6 inhibitor Tocilizumab in rheumatoid arthritis patients (ACTiON).
The ongoing trials comprise a genetic study in rheumatoid arthritis (BRAGGSS), participation in the rheumatoid arthritis biological register (BSR-BR) and collecting patients with polymyositis and dermatomyositis for genetic survey in the UK-Myonet study. We have recently started an industrial study on switching DMARDs-failure rheumatoid arthritis patients to Tocilizumab treatment (ACT-MOVE).
My newest research interest is giant cell arteritis (GCA) in collaboration with Professor Baskhar Dasgupta and colleagues at Southend University (YELLOW CARD trial) and nailfold capillaroscopy in chilblain lupus (NAIL-CAP trial) with the help of Professor Ariane Herrick and her Team at the University of Manchester. Our colleagues from the Leeds Biomedical Research Unit recently invited us to participate in an innovative new trial to evaluate synovitis and cartilage damage in active lupus patients (USEFUL trial).
Past research
The majority of my scientific activity is linked to the University of Bristol on the associations between pain, function and radiographic features in osteoarthritis of the knee joint. I described a new alignment for lateral imaging of the patellofemoral compartment in knee joint osteoarthritis and tested it in the everyday practice in Bristol in 1995. I also worked on measuring pain and disability in osteoarthritis of the knee joint, the role of practice guidelines in the diagnostics of osteoarthritis and the non-pharmaceutical therapy in this condition. Since 2003 I have spent periods of research leave with Professor Anthony Hollander at the Academic Rheumatology Unit at the University of Bristol, investigating a new method of autologous chondrocyte implantation in localised hyaline cartilage injury of the knee joint, treated by mosaic-plasty.
Other research studies in the past included the use of allopurinol in gouty arthritis, treatment options in hypophosphatemic osteomalacia, investigating heart-rate variability in scleroderma. I participated in the pioneering discovery of d-Penicillamin-induced myasthenia in rheumatoid arthritis patients, describing a new method measuring lateral flexion of the lumbar spine in ankylosing spondylitis and studying environmental and work-elated risk factors for low back pain.
I am also interested in medical history and published works about distinguished physicians, such as Richard Bright and Philip Hench.

LACHESIS LTD
Lachesis Ltd is a Limited Company, located in Lincolnshire, United Kingdom.
It is established and run by two health care professionals: Bela Szebenyi, a consultant in rheumatology and Andrea Szebenyi-Szeman, a specialist nurse.
The enterprise is registered by the Companies House in September 2013 - see attached certificate.
The Company originates its name from the Greek Mythology: Lachesis is one of the three Parkas (Moirai or Moirae).
THE MOIRAI (or Moirae) were the goddesses of fate who personified the inescapable destiny of man.
They assigned to every person his or her fate. Zeus, the god of fate, was their leader.
Klotho, whose name means "Spinner," spinned the thread of life. Lakhesis, whose name means "Apportioner of Lots", measured the thread of life. Atropos (or Aisa), whose name means "She who cannot be turned," cut the thread of life.
Our company is devoted to help people to achieve and maintain full health after a malady, in other words bridging the gap in between disease and and health.

Our location on the North and South parts of the Humber Estuary in North-East England, linked by the magnificent Humber Bridge, is symbolising this gap and also the hope that there is always help at hand.
